VOLTARA Gen2 FIRMWARE

Voltara Gen2 FW is the next chapter in Voltara ESCs. Same trusted hardware family you already know — rebuilt around a new firmware generation engineered to deliver more performance and absolute reliability when it matters most.

Why Gen2 #

Legacy served pilots well. It was stable, honest, and got the job done. But flying evolves — faster rigs, more demanding tunes, more aggressive pilots. We took everything we learned from thousands of flight hours on Legacy and asked one question: what would an ESC look like if we built it purely for performance, with zero legacy compromises?

Gen2 is the answer.

What’s new? #

Compatibility with all Flight Controllers. No more special Firmwares for protocol-dependent FCs, no more fiddling with flashing or changing settings. Now with its own advanced Configurator, everything is straightforward, no matter if you use Betaflight, Kiss-Ultra, Inav, Ardupilot, etc

Improved responsiveness. Gen2 tracks your flight controller’s corrections in real time — no softened commands, no lag. Your quad responds exactly when you tell it to, providing better flight characteristics.

Higher max eRPM. Gen2 is capable of reaching up to 700k eRPM+ (protocol dependent), a number much higher than legacy could.

Flexible Configuration. Gen2 exposes settings previously hardcoded, like Commutation Advance, PWM Frequency, Ramp-up & down, for the special cases where they are needed.

Bidirectional Mode(3D). Gen2 now has 3D capabilities. Set your FC to 3D mode, set your ESC’s to Bidirectional mode and enjoy upside-down flying.

These are just a few at-a-glance improvements over legacy, but the whole ecosystem changed with the main goal of providing the best performance under any use case.

Input Protocols #

  • Normal DSHOT — 150, 300, 600, 1200, 2400 — automatic detection
  • Bidirectional DSHOT with EDT — 150, 300, 600 — automatic detection
  • Analog PWM — 1000 to 2000 microseconds, auto-calibration

PWM Frequency #

  • Configurable PWM carrier: 24 kHz, 32 kHz, 48 kHz, 64 kHz
  • Automatic mode: adapts frequency to motor RPM for optimal efficiency and smoothness

Telemetry #

Every Voltara ESC streams per-motor telemetry to your flight controller:

  • Motor RPM (eRPM, revolution-averaged for clean RPM filters)
  • Voltage
  • Current
  • Temperature
  • Consumption (mAh)

Protections #

  • Soft current limiting — smooth power reduction, never an abrupt cut
  • Thermal protection — configurable temperature threshold with gradual rollback
  • Stuck-rotor protection — detects blocked props before they damage the motor
  • Shorted-FET detection at every boot — prevents powering a faulty ESC
  • Winding short check — catches pretty damaged motor wiring before it matters
  • Driver Fault protection — Voltara ESCs use smart gate drivers that can signal damage to the inverter parts or extreme current draw.
  • Stall protection – reliably detects and restarts the motor following a stall event.

Configurable Parameters #

Direction, 3D/bidirectional mode, slow start, startup power, timing advance, ramp up, ramp down, brake on stop, PWM frequency, current limit, temperature limit, stuck-rotor protection, beep volume, beep mode, lost-model beacon timer.

All adjustable in seconds through the Voltara Configurator via your flight controller — no external programmer required.

The Bottom Line #

Gen2 is Voltara at its sharpest. Pilots who upgrade from Legacy consistently describe the same experience: the quad feels like it finally does what the FC asks. Cleaner propwash, faster recovery, more control in the air.

If you trusted Legacy, you will love Gen2. If you have never flown Voltara before, Gen2 is the right place to start.
